Cochuna

Cochuna is a Quechua word that means “pass through the gorge”. Its name coincides with its geographical characteristics of the area. That is, Cochuna river gorge is the easiest access to the low and high valleys of the central area of “Los Nevados del Aconquija”.

Cochuna is part of the south circuit and tourists can access there through National Road Nº 365. The pavement road finishes in Alpachiri and then a dirty road goes on for around 20 km until the entrance.

It is highly recommended to go horse-riding. However, mountaineering excursions are available for more adventurous tourists. They could reach high Aconcagua Peaks or the highest summit in Tucumán called “El Clavillo de los Cerrillos”. It is at 5550 m above sea level.

Vegetation will surprise tourists who will feel embraced for horco molle trees, laurel, walnut trees, and a wide variety of ferns. Besides, the weather conditions allow visitors to visit it most part of the year. This area exhibits a privileged nature attribute. The thick vegetation and the paths along the subtropical forest are some reasons why this place is called the fantasy forest.

We should not forget the educational campsite called Samay Cochuna which means “a place to rest in the gorge” in aboriginal language. This place has 12 hectares. It belongs to Concepción City Hall and it is managed by sport and tourism sections.

The property is intended to educational camping. The main building is home to students from primary, secondary, college or university levels. But also, for visitors who are nature, outdoors activities and camping lovers. This is a propitious place to discover the local vegetation of the Yungas from Tucumán, the local fauna and the stunning landscapes.

Another remarkable characteristic is the whole property was adapted to welcome people with different abilities.

Samay Cochuna also includes social tourism for those vulnerable segments of society. In this way, pedagogical, recreational, humanitarian and cultural aims are covered.

Besides the facilities already mentioned, Samay Cochuna is full of signs to guide visitors during their stay. There are also barbecue areas surrounded by leafy trees. As a result, this is a wonderful place.
