If we want to soak up the authenticity and idiosyncrasies of southern Tucumán, Simoca is an ideal option. Visiting its Saturday fair, trying the "bridal cake" and taking a sulky ride are some must-sees.
Spices are one of the most wanted products at the Simoca Fair.
Its name comes from the Quechua word “Shimukay”, which means 'place of calm and silent people' or 'place of peace and silence', Simoca is located in the southeast of the province just 50 kilometers from San Miguel de Tucumán on the National Route No. 157.
Known as the National Capital of Sulky, it is a city very proud of its traditions and its most authentic exponent is the Saturday fair. There, vendors offer the most diverse products ranging from exquisite regional foods, crafts, cane honey, empanadas and rosquetes (a kind of round sweet bread), to imported items and cigarettes in chalas (corn leaves).
Simoca is a destination full of festivals. In July the National Fair Festival is celebrated: every saturday of the month the city awaits you with its classic fair plus gaucho parades and folklore shows. In November Simoca hosts the National Sulky Festival, which pays tribute to this legendary means of transportation that distinguishes it.
Visiting Simoca is also an invitation to visit its main square next to the La Merced Church and take a traditional sulky ride through its streets.
