Ampimpa, a Window to the Universe

Near Amaicha, you can visit one of the most breathtaking spots in the Calchaquí Valley: Ampimpa, a village at 2,560 meters above sea level, framed by hills and towering cacti. This destination is known as "The Balcony of the Valleys," as it offers a privileged view of the entire Santa María Valley.

At kilometer 107 of Route 307 is the renowned Ampimpa Astronomical Observatory, founded in 1985 to study the passage of Halley's Comet. Thanks to its geography, this valley boasts almost perpetually clear skies, making it a perfect destination for astrotourism and astrophotography, which is attracting a growing number of enthusiasts.

The Observatory hosts educational activities and science camps for students from schools throughout the province and the country. In addition, it is open to the public and offers cabin accommodations and dining, as well as the opportunity to observe the sky both day and night and visit its open-air Intihuatana Theme Park, where the origin of the Universe is explained.
