Around the year 800 AD, the Quilmes inhabited the landscapes of the mountains and the Calchaquí range and were one of the most important pre-Hispanic settlements of the Calchaquí peoples. It was a community that achieved immense social and economic development. In the 17th century it had 3,000 inhabitants in the urban area and 10,000 in the surrounding area.
