The first city you must visit when arriving in the province is San Miguel de Tucumán. There you will immerse yourself in the history of the independence of the country that was born in its cobblestone streets and whose aura persists to this day. The main tour is the Historic Center, which includes visits to the city's most significant buildings and civic places. These include the Historic House of Independence, the Government House, museums, art galleries, and historic religious temples. These sites are around the main green space, Plaza Independencia (Independence Square).

Independence Square

It is the main public promenade of the city and displays in its center the Statue of Liberty, made by the famous sculptor Lola Mora at the request of the then President Julio Argentino Roca. It was built in the colonial period to house the government buildings and the Cathedral Church, it grew and became a place surrounded by bars and museums that preserve its appearance to this day. The Plaza Independencia is surrounded by several prominent buildings, including the Government House, the Jockey Club Tucumán, the Economic Federation of Tucumán, the Padilla House, the Rougés Cultural Center, and the former Plaza Cinema, now the Mercedes Sosa Theater. Each of these buildings is known for its European architecture, which blends French and Italianate styles. Address: 400, 24 de septiembre Street, San Miguel de Tucumán.

Government House

Located in front of Independence Square, it is the highest public building in the province. It was built between 1908 and 1910 at the request of the former governor Luis F. Nougués and was inaugurated on July 9, 1912. It was built to replace the old Cabildo (Council) within the framework of the city’s modernization, thanks to the growing development of the sugar industry that turned Tucumán into the most important province of Northern Argentina. Its architectural style combines French baroque with Italian classicism to symbolically highlight its role as a public building. Its majestic White Hall, in art-nouveau style, saw hundreds of national and international figures pass by. In the entrance hall, crowned by a large bronze chandelier, rest the remains of the illustrious Juan Bautista Alberdi from Tucumán. When it gets dark, the lights of its imposing facade turn on, which forms an unparalleled postcard of the central part of the city.

Address: 90, 25 de Mayo Street, San Miguel de Tucumán.
