Jesuit Trail
Explore this circuit
In the heart of the province of Tucumán, the legacy of the Society of Jesus lives on in a circuit that combines history, architecture and faith. This tour invites us to explore the most emblematic sites that the Jesuits left behind as a testimony of their passage since 1585, when they arrived with the purpose of evangelizing in an innovative way for their time.
MAIN PLACES
San Miguel de Tucumán: San Francisco Church and Convent
Before becoming a Franciscan stronghold, the current San Francisco temple housed the Jesuit College and Convent until their expulsion in 1767. This Italianate-style building, whose façade was erected around 1880, preserves treasures such as a Recumbent Christ from the 18th century and an image of the Patron Saint Michael the Archangel, witness to crucial moments such as the Te Deum of the Declaration of Independence in 1816.
Lules: The Jesuit Missions of San José
This old farm stay, formed in the 17th century, was noted for its agricultural and educational activities. Here, the Jesuits established the first school of letters in the region, in addition to promoting the production of sugar cane and carts. The church, rebuilt by the Dominicans after the expulsion of the Jesuits, housed historical figures such as San Martín and Belgrano.
Tafí del Valle: Jesuit Heritage in the Heights
In this mountain valley are the Las Carreras and Las Tacanas farm stays, living examples of colonial architecture adapted to the environment. Las Carreras, famous for its production of Manchego cheeses, preserves an 18th-century oratory, while Las Tacanas preserves stories of prominent families and illustrious visitors such as the wise Miguel Lillo.
La Cocha: The Chapel of San Ignacio de Loyola
Built in 1746, this chapel represents the simplicity of colonial religious architecture. Among its treasures was a historic image of San Ignacio, today replaced by a replica. This place is also remembered as the first site in the region where sugar was manufactured.
Exploring the Jesuit Trail not only allows you to relive the history of one of the most influential religious orders in America, but also to enjoy a journey that connects past and present in a unique environment full of cultural richness. We look forward to seeing you on this journey!
