Piedra pintada (The Painted Stone)

In San Pedro de Colalao, the Painted Stone, a huge rock, is one of the most valuable relics of the village and it is located only an hour and a half away (walking) from San Pedro’s center.

Between rivers and hills, over a plateau surrounded by vegetation, there is this stone that amazes the tourist for its size: 3 meters long, 2.39 meters wide and 1.60 meters tall, buried about 2 meters under the soil.

The size is not the only captivating aspect of this rock discovered in 1877 by the professor Inocencio Liberal, but also its 45 images that show birds and other animal´s contours, carved on the sides of the stone. Though their meaning is unknown, it is thought to be related to cults to fertility and crops.
